3rd XI WIN at last....long time coming but worth the wait....!
05 Jun 2006
This was the 3rd XI's first victory for 18 months and what a way to do it!
Losing the toss, BECC were put into bat, which on such a hot and sunny afternoon was exactly what the Captain wanted to do anyway.
With late additions to the team, due to the Maccabi 20/20 tournament, BECC were still awaiting key players at 2pm, especially Cliff Horowitz as he was still on his way! David Kaplan stood in as opener with Harvey Samuels who, albeit found batting difficult on a dry and slow wicket, kept their wickets intact for the first 10 overs. This all changed when Kaplan was hit on the toe by a young bowler, and decided to go off to rest. Tim Cresner, Ellis Tuhrim and Eli Perl all also found batting difficult until Cliff came to the wicket and in his usual way, scored a quality 43 to give the bowlers something to work with. Sam Schryer supported well with 13 to his name.
After a lovely tea, and inspirational team talk, the team seriously believed that this was a game that they could win.
The opposition also started slowly but never really looked like they wanted the victory. Roy Davis and Tony Allan got the bowling going. Tony bowled tight and was unlucky not to get a deserved wicket (7-2-0-12) whilst Roy, also bowling tight took the wicket of their opener with the help of a superb Sam Schryer catch at deep mid-on (6-2-11-1)
Welcome the introduction of Cliff and David Kaplan. Bowling unchanged throughout the last 20 overs, these two bowled their hearts out. Cliff finishing with figures of 12-0-35-3 whilst David, even with a bruised toe, managed 13-4-12-6. It also needs mentioning that one of these wickets was a forward-diving catch from who else, Cliff!
David was this weeks very well deserved Man of the Match (with Cliff not too far behind).
A grand effort from all of the players and let's hope that this is the springboard that the 3rd XI need to continue throughout the season. Here to the next game!
