A very quick 50 helps boost B&E to a season record total

01 Mar 2006

The final Middlesex match of the season saw Belmont & Edgware 1st XI take on Harrow Weald at Parmiters in Garston. B&E won the toss and decided it was a good opportunity to get in some batting practice before the closing finals of the season dawn upon them.

Jonny Wynbourne and Eddie Davis took to the crease and battled their way through a difficult opening bowling spell. Both bowlers kept things very tight and couple with the ball swinging in the weather conditions, the side got off to a slow start but didn't lose any wickets. Wynbourne fell to a swinging delivery which brought Jonny Feigenbaum to the crease. Feigenbaum picked up the pace with 5 consecutive boundaries and was eventually caught for a solid 34. Nick McCleod added a further 20 to the total with some all-round stroke play and after he fell, David Davis was caught too. Skipper Richard Wienburg stepped up and with run rate at only 4 per over needed to move things on. 11 consecutive boundaries all sides of the pitch brought on a quick fire half century in around 20 balls. This boosted the rate as required until he was caught in the deep for 57. Richard Ableson came in with a few balls left and coasted home with a few more. Eddie Davis once again carried his bat for a solid 66 on an over-grown outfield which save many more off the bat and B&E finished on 222/5 in 40 overs.

Opening the 2nd innings was Jonny Wynbourne (2/22) and David Davis (0/20). Both bowlers kept things very tight and tore through the Harrow Weald openers. Unfortunately their captain was dropped cheaply and went on to score a good half century. Davis was far too good for the bat and struggled to pick up a wicket.

Neil Myeroff and Richard Ableson (1/23) took over and battled against the batsman as they were coming into form. Eddie Davis (1/15) replaced Ableson and broke through their captain with a fine delivery clipping the off stump. At the same time Myeroff (3/33) picked up a few other wickets with David Kay (1/0) taking the last of the tail.

The match brings to close the Middlesex competition. Belmont & Edgware finshed 2nd in the league behind Harrow St Mary's 1st XI who just snatched victory away from B&E two weeks ago. A fantastic performance and show of good sportsmanship by all members throughout the competition did well to introduce the club to non-Jewish league teams.
